Aloe vera hair oil is a popular homemade hair-care treatment that combines fresh aloe vera gel with nourishing carrier oils such as coconut oil or extra virgin olive oil. The result is a lightweight botanical oil that can be incorporated into a simple natural hair care routine.
Aloe vera is traditionally valued for its soothing and moisturizing properties, while coconut and olive oils can help condition the hair and improve its overall feel. Together, these ingredients create a simple treatment that may be especially appealing for people looking for a homemade scalp and hair oil.
Because fresh aloe vera contains a large amount of water, careful preparation is important when making an infused oil at home. Removing as much moisture as possible and storing the finished oil properly can help reduce the risk of spoilage.
Why Try Aloe Vera Hair Oil?
This homemade treatment combines two familiar hair-care ingredients in one preparation.
Aloe vera gel can provide a soothing, conditioning component, while the carrier oil helps spread the botanical ingredients across the scalp and hair.
Depending on the carrier oil you choose, the finished preparation can have a slightly different feel:
- Coconut oil: A popular choice for conditioning dry hair and helping reduce moisture loss.
- Olive oil: Provides a rich, emollient coating that can work well for dry or coarse hair.
- Aloe vera: Adds a botanical component traditionally associated with soothing and moisturizing hair care.
As with any homemade topical preparation, individual results can vary.
Ingredients and Equipment
Fresh Aloe Vera
- 1 large, mature aloe vera leaf
Fresh aloe provides the botanical component of the treatment. The clear inner gel should be separated carefully from the outer green portion of the leaf.
Carrier Oil
Choose one:
- 1 cup (240 ml) unrefined coconut oil
- 1 cup (240 ml) extra virgin olive oil
Equipment
You’ll also need:
- Sharp knife
- Cutting board
- Small saucepan
- Fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth
- Clean, completely dry glass storage bottle
Important Aloe Preparation Step
Fresh aloe leaves contain a yellowish latex located near the outer portion of the leaf. This latex contains compounds such as aloin and should not be intentionally included in a homemade scalp treatment.
To prepare the leaf, cut away the base and allow the leaf to stand upright for approximately 15 minutes so the yellow latex can drain.
Rinse the leaf thoroughly afterward before carefully removing the outer green skin and collecting the clear inner gel.
